Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (April 18, 2012) - Today in the Ministry of Economy and Antitrust Policy of the Kyrgyz Republic an inception workshop starts on the macro-and micro-simulation to assess development support measures and strategies. The workshop was organized by UNDP jointly with the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN-DESA/DPAD) in an effort to strengthen the analytical capacity of staff of relevant ministries. During the current year it is planned to hold four workshops for professionals of ministries to introduce to basics of integrated macro and micro simulation.

The Dag Hammarskjöld Fund for Journalists is now accepting applications from professional journalists from developing countries for its 2012 fellowship program. The application deadline is Wednesday, March 30, 2012.

The fellowships are available to radio, television, print and web journalists, age 25 to 35, from developing countries who are interested in coming to New York to report on international affairs during the 67th session of the United Nations General Assembly.  The fellowships will begin in early September and extend to late November and will include the cost of travel and accommodations in New York, as well as a per diem allowance.

Kyrgyzstan became a full member of the United Nations on March 2nd, 1992, hence the year 2012 marks the 20 years of existence of the UN in the Kyrgyz Republic. The country participates in world summits dedicated to modern developmental problems, and makes its contributions to the development of joint measures and solutions on the most pressing directions. Numerous important initiatives set forth by Kyrgyzstan have been supported by the UN member states.

On February 21, 2012 jury panel of the photography and poster contest titled Live Better: Right Here, Right Now met in the UN House in Bishkek to evaluate the submitted works. The contest was announced on December 1, 2011 and we stopped accepting submissions on February 10, 2012. Main goal of the contest was to visualize processes, principles, goals and other aspects of local self-governance. Works submitted for the contest will be used as advocacy and educational tools for the general public as well as decision makers.

Democratic Governance 

Sept-Oct – Around 200 local councilors took part in trainings in Bishkek city (Chui province) and in every province centers.  The training module was based on international materials adapted to Kyrgyzstan.  Basic competencies such as local policy formulation, decision-making, acting in the best interest of local communities were discussed during the trainings.  Moreover, participants also learned about representative role and oversight function of a councilor especially regarding executive bodies’ activities (Aiyl Okmotu).  The mode of teaching was interactive with a large number of different cases taken from everyday life of local councils, role-plays and experience sharing exercise as local councilors were coming from different districts.  Local councilors expressed a great interest to the subject and found the training very interesting and useful. От имени организаций системы ООН  еще раз  разрешите поздравить всех Вас с 20-летием независимости Кыргызской Республики.

Прошедшие 20 лет стали поистине судьбоносными  в истории вашей страны и ее народа. Пройденный  путь связан с  радикальными преобразованиями в политической и социально-экономической сферах. Трансформация государства и общества была сопряжена с  большими трудностями. Вместе с тем, за прошедшие годы ярко проявилась воля  народа Кыргызстана к построению демократического и современного общества с достойным уровнем жизни. Кыргызстан уверенно вошел в мировое сообщество, активно участвует в разностороннем международном сотрудничестве.

Democratic Governance 

August 1-5 – Training for media on legal and professional aspects of covering the upcoming presidential elections took place in Bishkek, Jalal-Abad and Osh. Journalists were trained to identify key issues in covering the electoral process and develop solutions.  The training combined theory and practical exercises with involvement of not only media trainers, but also lawyers, CEC members and press service.  More than 80 people from national and regional media outlets participated in the training.  The initiative was supported by UNDP Kyrgyz Elections Support Project funded by the EU and the German Government, in partnership with the CEC, Internews Network Representative Office and the International Foundation for Election System (IFES).  Learn more from Meder Dastanbekov, KESP Project Coordinator ( md@dgov.undp.kg).

July 13-17 – As part of series of capacity building trainings for partner organizations, EU-UNDP New Legal Framework Project conducted a workshop for 41 staff members of the Ministry of Justice including the Minister.  General objective of the workshop was strengthening overall capacity of the staff and assistance in drafting higher quality legislation.  Participants had an opportunity to deepen their knowledge and carry out five types of mandatory expertise in practice under guidance of experts.  Learn more from Ms. Gulmira Mamatkerimova, Project Manager (gm@dgov.undp.kg).

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (May 16, 2011) – The Second MDG Progress Report of the Kyrgyz Republic “is being launched at an opportune time with less than five years until the MDG deadline of 2015,” says Helen Clark, the United Nations Development Programme Administrator, at the report’s official launch ceremony today in Bishkek.  The Millennium Development Goals enshrined in the Millennium Declaration adopted by the world community in 2000 have been guiding the country’s development agenda setting the milestones for decision makers since then.
