UNDP in Kyrgyzstan Launched a New Project on Effective Disaster Risk Management for 2012-2016

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (February 10, 2012) – Today UNDP in Kyrgyzstan presented a new project called "Effective disaster risk management for sustainable development and human security" to the local appraisal committee. The project is designed for 2012-16 and will be implemented together with the Kyrgyz Republic Ministry of Emergency Situations to help the Government reduce disaster risks and strengthen the national system of prevention and preparedness. The total project budget for 5 years is $5 million.

Leaders and executive officers of ministries and departments, UN agencies and other international organizations involved in prevention and management of emergency situations attended the meeting. As the UN Resident Coordinator / UNDP Resident Representative in Kyrgyzstan, Mr. Alexander Avanessov pointed out in his speech: "forthcoming activities of UNDP in Kyrgyzstan defines disaster risk reduction as a cross-cutting theme, interconnected with such areas as good governance, social inclusion and equality, comprehensive and sustainable development for the purpose of poverty reduction".

The project sets Hyogo Framework for Action and Millennium Development Goals as priorities and goes in line with the goals set by the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic in the field of Civil Protection.

The problem of disaster risk reduction is more relevant than ever, as numbers of emergencies and their victims increasing not only in Kyrgyzstan, but around the world. The country's assistance in disaster risk reduction is one of the priority activities for UN agencies, including UNDP, which is indicated in the strategic UNDAF document, signed in March 2011 between the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic and the United Nations.
